Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay, was an American professional boxer, activist, and philanthropist. Nicknamed "The Greatest," he is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century and as one of the greatest boxers of all time. At age 18 he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Olympics. He converted to Islam in 1961 changing his name to Muhammad Ali. His actions as a conscientious objector of the Vietnam War caused him to lose his boxing titles and be banned from boxing. This ruling was overturned ten years later. He was active in the Civil Rights movement and supported many charities. Ali fought and beat such notable athletes as Joe Frazier and George Foreman becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. He was known for his often free-style talk with rhyme schemes and spoken word poetry, anticipating elements of hip hop.
